Gulfside Assembly

Waveland, Mississippi

Founded in 1923 as the "Gulfside Chatauqua and Camp Meeting Ground" by Robert  Jones, the first African American Methodist Bishop, Gulfside has played an important role in the Methodist Church. Originally conceived by Bishop Jones as a retreat for "Negro Christians" it soon became a vocational school for underprivilaged youth and later served the Church as a place for spirtitual retreats, family reunions, training of clergy and housing for seniors.

Gulfside served the Church and community until August of 2005. The eye of hurricane Katrina passed directly over the Gulfside campus destroying everything in its path including the newly dedicated, two-week-old community center. A multi-phase plan has been undertaken with the goal of creating a new Ministry Center so that Gulfside can again provide services to the Church and community.

The first phase of the project is to provide resort-style senior housing on the Gulf. Proceeds from this first phase will then be used to help fund the new Ministry Center.
