The Dog Day of Summer: A Celebration of National Dog Day

The dog days are hot, but Pi has design ideas to create communities that are comfortable for every pet owner and pet. We asked our team to share some of their pet pictures as we celebrate the benefits of pets! Just ask any pet owner how they feel about their pets, and most would say, “They’re family.” In fact, about half of all adults aged 50 and older have at least one pet and about a third have multiple animals. Not surprisingly, dogs and cats are most popular.
So when it comes time to move into a senior living community, prospects are likely to want to bring their “family” with them. Communities that allow residents to share their homes and lives with their pets will appeal to these individuals and give them an advantage over other communities. The ability to live with pets in senior living can enable residents to age in place longer, as studies show that pet ownership can contribute to health. For instance, petting an animal can lower stress, improve mood, and reduce blood pressure; give people a sense of purpose; and ward off loneliness and isolation.

Among the attractive amenities for pet people:
Secured outdoor spaces, including fenced patios, yards, courtyards.
Onsite dog parks.
Onsite availability of veterinary care/services (think an exam room and weekly or monthly visits from a veterinarian)
Grooming facilities and regular access to grooming services
Dining venues/spaces where people can bring their pets, including a bar or coffee shop that hosts ‘Yappy Hours’ with special treats for dogs and humans alike
Particularly in rural areas, stables and riding paths for horses
On-site pet sitting and walking services for residents’ pets.
Pet-related activities (think crafting for pet clothes/costumes/toys, dog shows, meetup groups, etc.)
Pop-up or on-site pet supply shops
Resident-run pet sitting services
Pop-up adoption fairs
Pet-loss grief counseling services
